Give. And You Shall Receive.

I’ve been dealing with a mentality of lack since I’ve been home for the Thanksgiving holiday. Holiday spending, having family and friends comment on my chosen line of work, seeing their financial need, and dealing with my own feelings of lack all led me to get my thoughts and feelings about money in order.

Earlier this month, I chose to combat feelings of scarcity by deeming the month of November as a month of “OVERFLOW.” So whenever I became concerned about anything dealing with finances, I reminded myself that November is a month of overflow, a month of more than enough. This allowed me to make decisions based on the knowledge that I will have more money coming even if I didn’t see it in my hands at the moment.

There is power in what you tell yourself. In addition to that I practice a few strategies to overcome a scarcity mindset and my favorite is to GIVE (I’ll admit, sometimes in excess). I find that it feels better to give than to receive. And I try to do this in lots of areas. If I want love, I show others love. If I want opportunities to come to me, I share opportunities with others. If I want money, I give more freely. It sounds odd, but you can attract what you want by putting it out there!

So this season, don't be bogged down with pressures to purchase everything you think you want and need for yourself and for others. Don't feel bad because there is a need for more. Appreciating what currently have and what you are able to do can help you realize that your situation may not be as bad as it seems. You might even be inspired to give to those who are less fortunate than you. And that's where the real joy comes in!

Don't let this holiday season be all about the gifts and the "haves," let it be a season of heart. Try making a gift instead of purchasing, giving to a charity on behalf of someone, hosting a potluck where everyone contributes to the evening, or spending quality time making new memories with old friends and your loved ones to really give the best present this holiday season.
